St. Louis College Prep’s middle school cross-country team performed well on Wednesday when they competed in their first meet of the season at Jefferson Barricks Park.
DeAndre Jones took the top time for the boy’s team with a time of 15:33. Ian Bradley closely followed him with a time of 18:05. Belicia Funches took the top time for the girls with a time of 25:22.
“It was challenging,” she said. “Your first meet, your mind set is you want to be at the front of everybody and you want to represent your school well.”
Bradley agreed, noting that he felt he had started off the race too strong.
“Then a lot of people started passing me and I had to keep up and I started to loose energy,” he said. “Next race I will start off jogging.”
Funches said another runner who she met on the trail had helped her in the race.
“She was encouraging me to keep running and she ran with me to the end so I could keep my pace,” said Funches. “I ended up coming in 98 out of 200 runners.
Bradley said he came in 50th out 300 competitors.
“The next race (held at Kirkwood North Middle School on Oct. 3) will be on a flat surface so we will not be running up hills,” said Funches. “I think I will be able to do well and stay in front. On the hills your legs are just burning . Going down was easy but running up the hills was a challenge for me.”
Both runners said they had decided to do cross-country to help build up endurance for other sports.
“I also just like cross country because my dad did it,” added Bradley.
The team consists of Charzetta Edwards, DeAndre Jones, Randy Clayborne, Oscar Correa-Glarza, Josh Haegele, Tevon Wiley, Belicia Funches, Che’Kyra Greenlee, Nya Torrence, Jade Willis, Mark Tuggle, Kendall Burks, Deron Moffitt, Stephen Hamilton, Ian Bradley, Kai Cross, Antonio Williams, Elijah Hubbard, Patrick Lucas, Irakoze Bahati and Kevin Burnett.
