St. Louis College Prep was the place to be this week for sports fans who also like clean cars, as 11 members of the St. Louis College Prep Basketball team spent an afternoon washing cars to help raise money to participate in a variety of summer basketball camps and league play.
The team raised over $400 with the event, which St. Louis College Prep Athletics Director Tim Basler said would cover the cost of a two-day camp at Lindenwood University.
“We had mostly staff come out for the car wash, but also some friends and some standalone donations,” he said. “The Lindenwood camp will be a two day camp with 10 other high schools. They will do a day of drills and then a day of tournament style play.
“The way we want to grow the program and become part of the Missouri State High School Activities Association, and being part of districts and hopefully getting to state it is crucial that the participate in events like this,” said Basler. “They need to be playing basketball in the summer just like all of the other high schools.”
Basler said that the Lindenwood camp was just part of a larger plan of summer activities for the basketball team.
“They are also going to a camp at Lincoln University,” he said we need to raise funds for lodging, transportation, meals and for the camp itself. Then they are also playing in three summer leagues and that will be quite costly with transportation and league fees.
“We are also hoping to have them participate in some fun teambuilding events like going to Six Flags,” Basler added. “We want to keep the focus on that team concept.”
Basler said funding some for the summer events would be raised through a men’s basketball league being hosted at the school this summer and through another car wash day, but he noted that the total cost for the planned summer training would be close to $5,000.
“Please keep and eye out for any of our fundraisers,” he said. “Or feel free to make a direct donation at http://www.stlcollegeprep.org/support-scp.”
