For the second year in a row, scholar artists from St. Louis College Prep will have a chance to share their work with the greater St. Louis area art community.
Art Instructor Julie Linneman said she is excited her scholars will have the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Shaw Art Fair this Saturday and Sunday.
“It is really important for my scholars in my studio art class that are thinking about doing art as a career to have this opportunity,” she said. “They will have a chance to show off their work and to interact with other artists at the show.”
She said this year the school would mainly be featuring work by high school students.
“Last year it was mainly middle school work and a little bit of high school work,” she said. “We had a lot of parents last year who were really impressed by the work, some were even asking if we were a fine arts school. We had a lot of people who did not know about our school so it was really cool that we were able to get our name out there.”
She said this year’s exhibit would feature a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, collage, mixed media and oil pastel.
“The high school students in my drawing class are currently working on a graffiti art project which they are going to be exhibiting at the show,” she said.
Scholars from the school will be at the show on Saturday, and volunteer school staff will man the school’s booth on Sunday.
Linneman said in addition to showing off her scholars’ work, the booth would also be providing a free art activity for children ages 10 and younger.
“They will have a chance to make owls out of pinecones,” she said, noting that the activity would be provided as long as supplies lasted. “It is really good for the scholars to have a chance to volunteer as well. It is a good chance for them to get out and do something.”
The Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association (SNIA) has hosted the very popular Shaw Art Fair each fall since 1993. Located on the tree-lined parkway of beautiful Flora Place at Tower Grove Avenue, the Historic Shaw Art Fair is one of the premier fine art and fine craft fairs in the St. Louis area. It is highly rated by art fair magazines and participating artists. Roughly 135 top caliber artists and craftspeople from around the country are selected each year to participate in the professionally juried event.
The event is held concurrently with the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Best of Missouri Market, which is located directly across Tower Grove Avenue from the Shaw Art Fair.
