SPED Math Instructor Katie Hubertus has joined the St. Louis College Prep teaching staff with the beginning of Cycle II.
Ms. Hubertus said she was excited to be teaching in a charter school environment after eight years of teaching ninth-grade algebra at Hazelwood Central High School.
Hubertus said she got involved in education after earning her finance degree at UMSL.
“Instead of going for the big money, I decided I wanted to help kids,” she said, noting that she earned her teaching degree at the age of 25. “You can really do a lot to shape their minds and help mold them in middle school and high school. I wanted to help them not make the same mistakes I did at their age.
“I also have my principal certification as well with a Master’s Degree from Lindenwood University,” she said. “That is my ultimate goal – to be in a leadership role.”
Ms. Hubertus said she was looking forward to getting back into the classroom after taking time off to have her second child, an eight-month-old boy, noting that she was excited to have found a position at St. Louis College Prep during a non-traditional hiring time period for educators.
“There is a lot more structure here that they actually follow through on than what you find at public schools,” she said. “I came from a school of over 2,000 students. I like the individualism of this school where I can actually help the students.”
When she is not teaching or spending time with her two children, Ms. Hubertus said she enjoys flying, a passion she has had since she was in high school herself.
“I have my pilots license,” she said. “I was in the Civil Air Patrol, but decided not to join the Air Force.”
